I'm Alexander C. 19 years young.
Sometimes I write.
You could call it poetry, prose or whatever, but it feels good to have it ‘out there’ and not just scribbled illegibly in a beat up Staples notebook.

Everything here written by myself, unless stated otherwise.

Ivan the Terrible and his Son Ivan, 1885

Ugh, I love this painting so much.

Just some background stuff, Ivan the Terrible was the Tsar of Russia for most of the 16th Century. In I think 1581, he caught his daughter-in-law wearing ‘immodest clothing in front of everyone’ and struck her. She was apparently pregnant and she may or may not have had a miscarriage because of it.

Ivan’s son and the girl’s husband, also named Ivan after his father, hears about it and gets into a really heated argument with his father that ends with Ivan the Terrible taking a swing at his son with his pointed staff. It’s said that he immediately fell down and kissed his son’s face, pressing his hands against his left temple to try to stop the bleeding. He famously screamed “May I be damned! I’ve killed my son! I’ve killed my son!” His son briefly regained consciousness and his last words were “I die as a devoted son and most humble servant.”

I love all the details. I love the pointed staff lying on the ground and the signs of a fight with the tossed over chair, disturbed carpet, and the door wide open. I love the single tear on Ivan’s face and their position on the floor. This is a really gorgeous but raw depiction of one of the darkest moments in an incredible man’s life. I wish there were more historical paintings like this.

Shit’s history, yo

I wish that I believed in fate
I wish I didn’t sleep so late
I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders
I’m Mr. November, I won’t fuck us over.

And those couples, in cafe windows
staring longingly
over their cups of coffee…
well I wish I were in his shoes, and you were in hers, but i guess our journey is more complicated than theirs.

Stones (Dorian Gray)

Like a stone dropped into the water,
the ripples may grow fainter and fainter,
But at the same time, the distance covered is greater.
Like a stone dropped into the water - if you persist,
you’ll get where you want to be.

My arms were walls, shoulders pillows
her eyes were windows I fell right through,
sharing her past and pain,
till her mind became my soul.

But all we can do is hope and wait;
our rafters are all but time and fate.

You’re a millstone on the end of a telephone line,
you’re an anchor to my bedside,
the further apart we get, the tighter the grip around your neck.
She sleeps on the edge of a double bed,
waiting for someone to inhabit the rest.

But all we can do it hope and wait;
our foundations are all but time and fate,

you can’t conceal which can’t be seen, you can’t hide your heartbeats.
i wear a broken watch to remind me that time can stop,
you’re no Dorian Gray, if you stay, if you stay,
you’ll be swallowed up.

Like a stone dropped into the water…

“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter - tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… And one fine morning -
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

Boom.

Lost time is never found, my dear, I have learnt.

Youth is the longest day, so go out and play before the nights roll in.
